Obviously both girls are meant to be old before their age because of the whole zombie apocalypse thing but a lot of the dialogue just doesn’t ring true, and is clearly the writer talking and not the characters. They play with water pistols and throw bricks at car windows but they also bicker like an old couple and the game lurches awkwardly from trying to prove how young and innocent they are in terms of their actions and then writing them like they’re the adult actors they clearly are (Riley’s voice actress in particular doesn’t sound a day younger than 30.) Unlike the main game Left Behind isn’t trying to make some grand point about love as a selfish emotion, it’s just trying to tell an affecting story about a little girl that doesn’t want to lose another person close to her.īut that actually is Left Behind’s one flaw: neither of the leads seems to in anyway act their age. All the locations are all new and, just as with the original, the effort and attention to detail is obvious at all times – from the snowflakes settling on Ellie’s hair to the amazing book of puns you can get her to read out loud for Riley.Īt first there seems little connection between Ellie’s flashback and Joel’s predicament (and diary entries from a crashed helicopter crew), but as you begin to realise where the story is leading the relevance become obvious. There’s nothing that really counts as new in terms of gameplay mechanics, but we’re loathe to call the game lazy. There’s a tense journey through a clicker-filled pet shop and a thrilling showdown with survivors at the end, which uses the idea of setting infected against enemy humans in a more effective way than the main game usually managed. The games flits back and forward between Ellie’s search for medical supplies and the flashbacks with Riley, with the former reusing the game’s stealth and action elements in some effective set pieces.

Left Behind, the single-player downloadable content for The Last of Us, will be available as a standalone download on May 12, Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer announced today on the PlayStation Blog.
